Preparing for birth involves more than packing a hospital bag or finishing the nursery. Mental and emotional preparation can play a powerful role in how you experience labor and delivery. One simple but meaningful tool many families use during pregnancy and birth is birth affirmations.

One of our favorite ways to encourage clients is using birth affirmations. Birth affirmations are short, encouraging phrases designed to encourage calm, confidence, trust, and focus during pregnancy and labor. They can help shift anxious thoughts into more reassuring ones and remind you of your strength during the birth process.

Affirmations are not about pretending birth is easy or painless. Instead, they help many mothers stay mentally centered, reduce fear, and approach labor with confidence and intention.

Some families choose to:

  • Read affirmations daily during pregnancy

  • Hang them around the house or birth space

  • Save them as phone wallpapers

  • Listen to recorded affirmations during labor

  • Have a partner or doula read them aloud during contractions

Fear and tension can often make labor feel more overwhelming. Positive affirmations can encourage relaxation, deeper breathing, and a greater sense of trust in your body and the birth process. Especially if you’ve practiced relaxing to these affirmations prior to labor- muscle memory is a real thing!

Many mothers find affirmations helpful because they:

  • Encourage a calmer mindset

  • Promote confidence during labor

  • Help redirect anxious thoughts

  • Create a peaceful birth environment

  • Serve as grounding reminders during intense moments

Birth is both physical and emotional. Feeling supported mentally can make a meaningful difference in your overall experience.

Examples of Birth Affirmations

Every mother connects with different phrases, so it’s okay to choose affirmations that personally resonate with you. Some families prefer empowering affirmations, while others prefer calming or faith-based encouragement.

Here are a few popular birth affirmations:

  • My body was designed for birth.

  • I can do hard things.

  • Each contraction brings me closer to meeting my baby.

  • I trust my body and my baby.

  • I am safe, calm, and supported.

  • My baby and I are working together.

  • I breathe in peace and breathe out tension.

  • I am strong enough for this moment.

  • My body knows what to do.

  • I release fear and welcome peace.

Faith-Based Birth Affirmations

Many Christian families also appreciate incorporating Scripture and faith-centered reminders into their labor preparation. These can provide comfort, peace, and reassurance throughout pregnancy and birth.

Some examples include:

  • God is with me through every moment.

  • I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

  • The Lord gives me strength and peace.

  • I do not need to fear because God is with me.

  • My baby is wonderfully created and deeply loved.

Birth affirmations can be even more effective when paired with continuous support during labor. A doula can help remind you of your goals, encourage relaxation techniques, provide emotional reassurance, and create a calming environment throughout the birth experience.

Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, you deserve to feel supported, informed, and encouraged every step of the way!

There is no “perfect” way to give birth, and every labor experience is unique. Birth affirmations are simply one tool that can help you feel more prepared, grounded, and confident as you approach delivery.

As you prepare to meet your baby, remember this: you are capable, supported, and stronger than you think.
