Should I give my nanny a holiday bonus?

Holiday bonuses for nannies

Here are some tips on holiday bonuses for your nanny, including how much and when to give, and other ways to say “thank you” to your family’s trusted caregiver.

Why to give your nanny a holiday bonus:

Your nanny is an important part of your family’s life, providing love and care for your child. As such, it’s important to say thank you often, and that “thank you” can come in the form of a holiday or year-end bonus.

How much to give your nanny for a holiday bonus:

For a full-time nanny, a typical holiday bonus may be one to two weeks' salary. However, the amount you choose can depend on how long your nanny has been with you and your family's financial means. If your nanny has been with you for less than one year, you may consider one day’s pay for each month she’s worked for your family.

If one to two week's salary isn't in the cards for you financially (perhaps you're watching your budget so you can pay your nanny a decent wage) a lower amount is still appropriate and appreciated. You can consider adding paid time off in addition to a smaller cash bonus. Whatever amount you choose, a bonus lets your nanny know they are appreciated and offers an additional incentive to continue working for your family.

When to give your nanny a holiday bonus:

Consider that the sooner you can give your nanny her holiday bonus, the sooner she can use it. We recommend giving your nanny her bonus around Thanksgiving.

Gifts vs bonuses for nannies:

It’s such a lovely gesture to give your nanny a holiday gift, and it can certainly be paired with your bonus. A small, handmade gift from your child, or some kind of keepsake that will remind her of her time with your family is a really sweet idea. We do not, however, recommend replacing a bonus with a gift. Nannies we’ve spoken to have talked about receiving expensive gifts but would have preferred to have cash to spend on what they want/need instead.

Other ways to say Thank You:

  • An extra day off

  • Gift card for a treat-yourself kind of day (manicure, massage)

  • An Amazon gift card (always appreciated)

  • A framed photo of your nanny with your kids

  • Any gift that’s related to your nanny’s hobbies or interests

  • A gift certificate to a nice restaurant

  • An experience your nanny might not otherwise treat herself to (a show, a class, an event)
